The journey of “Crescendo” began with a conversation with my uncle, Misha Rachlevsky, a world-renowned musician, and conductor: www.youtube.com/@Leviant17

Misha’s passion for music and his vision for a new string orchestra (the 4th in his carrier) inspired the creation of this painting. Originally, “Crescendo” was meant to be displayed and auctioned at a classical music concert Misha was to conduct, an event designed to bring together 16 talented musicians. Although the concert was postponed, I felt compelled to bring the painting to life, intrigued by the idea that Misha offered to me.

The color palette of “Crescendo” was dictated by the concert program Misha selected, which was based on the concept of Chromesthesia.  This fascinating phenomenon, where sound involuntarily evokes an experience of color was notably explored by many, but most famously by the Russian composer and pianist Alexander Scriabin. Scriabin’s innovative approach to music and his development of a color system based on the circle of fifths deeply resonated with me. As a result, the painting features deep blues and vibrant yellow-orange hues, reflecting the emotional and visual impact of the music and its synesthetic color associations.

In terms of composition, “Crescendo” was heavily inspired by the dramatic sunsets Misha would send me as references. As with all expressionist abstracts, the painting is open to interpretation. One of those could be telling a story of contrast and transformation, with the deep blue at the bottom possibly representing dark forces. From the heart of the painting, a strong light emerges, symbolizing hope and resilience. This light culminates in the top right corner with intense yellow-orange tones, depicting the triumph of good over evil.  The colors in “Crescendo” almost leap off the canvas, creating a three-dimensional effect. This dynamic interplay of colors reflects the struggle and eventual triumph, making the piece a vivid representation of light overcoming darkness.
